Ok everyone. Nice and short this week ;) 1,000 points of no value to the person who can tell me what story I adapted this from. lol May the games begin!
The soft grass tickled Arnold’s cheek as he slowly woke up from the hazy dream. Only, as he sat up he realized this was the dream. Reality was far behind. He rolled my eyes and fell on his back, the ground felt like a soft pillow. He could hear my uncle’s insane laugh in the distance. Why his Uncle insisted on dragging him to this forsaken world Arnold may never know.
Arnold quickly took the yellow ring off his finger and slid it into his right pocket. He had to be careful to put it in the correct pocket. Wouldn’t want to upset Uncle and accidentally touch the green ring. Then again ,that may not be a bad idea.
“Uncle Andrew, why must I come back here again?”
“Come now, Diggory! It is an adventure!”
“My name is not Diggory! It is Arnold. Diggory is my cousin.”
“Ah yes, very well. Now follow me, Arnold!
Uncle Andrew sprinted and jumped into the wooded world. Arnold chased after him, careful not to slip into a puddle and vanish. He had watched Uncle Andrew do just that thing too often a time for Arnold to follow suit.
“Aha! This shall do nicely.” Uncle Andrew said as he stopped by a small puddle, one of the smallest Arnold had ever seen.
“Why?”
“Why not?” His crazy uncle’s way of thinking never made any sense. “Well, come on boy!” Uncle Andrew took hold of his hand and jumped in. Arnold closed his eyes. This part always felt weird.
Arnold opened his eyes and gasped. He was sitting in a chair, where it came from he could not guess, on top of a floating upside down tree by the looks of it. He stood up for a moment and quickly sat back down, feeling dizzy. What if he never made it home?
He looked up, bewildered and eyes wide at looking at a planet hovering above them.
Uncle Andrew stood, arms wide. “This is marvelous! We have been shrunk!”
“WHAT?” Arnold shouted. He couldn’t see his own face but he was sure it was pale.
“You see my dear boy, that is a root under us and that is a planet above. Although I cannot quite explain it’s presence.” He placed his hand around his chin and surveyed the planet. He mumbled something else before continuing for Arnold to hear. “ And the water above us is the water of the puddle in the forest of puddles. My, my, my this is extraordinary!”
“No it isn’t. Uncle, please I want to go home!”
“But we have just begun this exciting discover, Diggory.”
“NO!” Arnold jumped up out of his chair and stormed several feet to a tall, black lamp. It’s flame flickered slightly in the crazy atmosphere. “My name is Arnold! Diggory is my cousin!” He kicked the lamp with all his strength. As if it were glass, the lamp came up out of the broken ground and drifted up through the water and was gone out of their sight. He wondered where it would go.
His uncle dropped his arms, his smile faded. “Very well then. Take my hand.” Arnold took his uncle's hand. “Jump as high as you can on three.”
“One, two, three!”
With all the strength he could muster he jumped. And jump they did, right out of the puddle. Soaking wet, they were back in the forest.
“I am leaving, Uncle Andrew and I am never returning to this horrible crazy place!” He began to stick his hand in his right pocket. Uncle Andrew watched, his eyes grew wide as he threw his hands out.
“Arnold, NO! Not the yellow one!”
It was too late.
His fingers had touched the yellow ring. The green ring would have taken him home.
The yellow ring, well that was something neither he nor uncle andrew knew where it would take them.
Uncle Andrew began to spin out of his sight. Fear seized him. So much for going home.
Love the ending! Great characterization too! :)
