Weekly Expressions #16 ~TJ

~The Dutch Sailor~

He promised he'd return from his first trip,
Perhaps the ocean dared not let him off that ship.
A daring man, a fine sailor, hero of my heart,
Taken from me forevermore, to never again depart.

Our land was vast, our nation great,
Our greedy neighbors envied what we ate.
They made war on us, both lands devastated,
Loyalties severed, true hatred created.

Our military was strong, but not of the boot,
The power was in our navy, of the mighty Fluyt.
A ship used to trade in peace, a beautiful boat.
But with it's mighty cannons, it's enemies no longer float.

A man went to sail to war, my one true love.
But his ship took many shots, and drove into the mud.
A fighter, a conqueror, a strong man he was,
But his heart was softer than the feathers of a dove.

God, rest my husband, give him peace.
Give him a place in heaven, by Your holy trees.
And Lord, when my time comes to meet him then,
Grant us a heavenly boat ride, just You, me, and him.
